Scientists in the Philippines have identified a huge carcass that recently washed up on a beach in Cagdainao in the Dinagat Islands.

The 20-foot long body, which appeared to be covered in white hair, was found earlier this week.

Locals were perplexed as to what the creature could be - and as images of the carcass appeared online social media was rife with outlandish speculation.

Some suggested  it could be a seacow, while others speculated - not entirely seriously - that it could be a giant shitzu of "that creature from The Neverending Story".

Locals speculated that the creature may have been killed by a recent earthquake, but researchers now believe it was hit by a ship.

Regional officials have now issued a statement saying that personnel from the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources had determined that the creature was a whale, but they have so far been unable to determine what type due to its advance decomposition.

Samples have been sent to Manila for more detail lab analysis.

"The carcass has a total length of 6.3 meters excluding the tail which is missing and a total width of two meters from the dorsal to pectoral fin," the statement said, adding that the creatures bones will be preserved as a "memento of this rare event in our Municipality."
