An exciting initiative for the 21st century with historic roots, the Ethiopian Music Festival (Festival de Musique Ethiopienne) was founded in 2001 and now boasts an impressive list of sponsors that includes UNESCO, Ethiopia’s National Theatre and the Goethe Institute of Addis Ababa. This strong cultural support is entirely justified, for the festival’s original aims were to promote, protect and encourage the performance of Ethiopia’s distinctive music. Those aims remain unchanged, but as the festival has grown in size and profile it has expanded to include overseas performers who have been influenced by Ethiopian musical tradition, many of whom come from France.
